Atalanta took the lead in the 11th minute when Mario Pasalic scored from close range. Duvan Zapata doubled the lead in the 33rd minute with a low shot from outside the box. Hans Hateboer added the third goal in the 53rd minute.
Leverkusen had several chances to get back into the game but they were unable to find a way past Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello. Atalanta held on for the victory and celebrated a historic night in Dublin.
