US Frees Maduro Ally in Prisoner Swap with Venezuela

Seven Americans Released in Exchange

In a rare softening of hostile relations, the White House announced on Saturday that Venezuela has released seven Americans who were being held as prisoners. The move came as part of a prisoner swap deal that also involved the release of a close ally of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Fugitive Released

In addition to the seven Americans released by Venezuela, a fugitive wanted by the U.S. has also been freed from Venezuelan custody. The fugitive, Alex Saab, was detained in Cape Verde in 2020 while his plane was grounded for refueling. He was later extradited to the United States on money laundering charges.

Biden Administration Officials Comment

Biden administration officials said that the deal resulted in the release of seven American citizens who were imprisoned in Venezuela. They also confirmed that Saab was released as part of the swap. The officials did not provide further details about the deal.
